Hai mai sentito parlare di ESC-Corpi Europei di Solidarietà?

Il Corpo Europeo di Solidarietà (ESC) è un'iniziativa dell'UE che consente ai giovani di svolgere un periodo di volontariato all'estero (tendenzialmente in Unione Europea), supportando le attività di un'organizzazione. L'obiettivo di un'esperienza ESC è quello di dare la possibilità ad un giovane di vivere un'esperienza interculturale e di solidarietà, favorendo il miglioramento e lo sviluppo di nuove capacità e competenze.

I progetti e le opportunità possono riguardare un'ampia gamma di settori: istruzione e formazione, cittadinanza e partecipazione democratica, ambiente, migrazione, cultura, arte e molti altri. Anche la durata di ciascun progetto può variare, dai 2 ai 12 mesi.

Chi può partecipare?

Giovani di età compresa tra i 18 e i 30 anni, regolarmente residenti in uno dei seguenti Paesi: - Stati Membri dell'Unione Europea, ma anche alcuni Paesi Extra UE che fanno parte del programma - Islanda, Macedonia del Nord, Turchia, Liechtenstein. - paesi partner (Albania, Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaigian, Bielorussia, Bosnia-Erzegovina, Egitto, Georgia, Israele, Giordania, Kosovo, Libano, Libia, Moldavia, Montenegro, Marocco, Norvegia, Palestina, Russia, Serbia, Siria, Tunisia, Ucraina)

Che tipo di supporto ricevi?

L'UE finanzia l'esperienza ESC prevedendo di coprire le spese di viaggio (entro determinati limiti), l'alloggio, il vitto, un pocket money mensile, un corso di lingua, formazione ed un'assicurazione sanitaria per tutta la durata dell'attività.

Ma perché dovresti partire?

Conoscere culture diverse e stringere legami di amicizia con giovani della tua età che provengono da Paesi diversi, imparare un'altra lingua, metterti in gioco e perché no, sperimentarti, capire cosa ti piace e non ti piace fare. E...chissà, che non sia un modo per schiarirti le idee su quali strade e percorsi formativi/professionali intraprendere in futuro, come è stato per tanti altri giovani come te!? Alla fine dell'esperienza potrai ricevere lo Youth Pass, un certificato di autovalutazione delle competenze, che descrive nello specifico le competenze che sei riuscito ad acquisire durante l'esperienza di volontariato.

Have you heard of ESC?

The European Solidarity Corps is an EU initiative that allows young people to help and improve local communities, mostly across Europe, but also in their home country, simply by volunteering in projects who benefit both the locals and the individual. The goal is to place a young person in a different environment and improve their skills, or even better, develop new ones, while also provide a different point of view to the natives. A perfect symbiosis should be the result of an ESC experience, as both sides have to keep an open mind and a different perspective over the challenges they'll face together. After all, inclusion is a key word in this program.

The projects and opportunities can be in a wide range of fields – education and training, citizenship and democratic participation, environment and natural protection, migration, culture, humanitarian aid, and many others. The duration of each project may vary too, up to 12 months.

So, who can participate?

Young people aged between 18 and 30, legally residing or having the nationality of one of the following: - Member States of the European Union, but also some Non-EU countries who are part of the program - Iceland, North Macedonia, Turkey, Liechtenstein. - Other countries, neighboring the EU are considered partner countries (Albania, Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Egypt, Georgia, Israel, Jordan, Kosovo, Lebanon, Libya, Moldova, Montenegro, Morocco, Norway, Palestine, Russia, Serbia, Syria, Tunisia, Ukraine)

Some projects may have additional restrictions by age, legal residence or nationality, depending on the type of project and how it is funded. You can start applying even earlier, but by the time the project starts, you must be at least 18 years old and the participation is open up to 30.

And how does it happen?

After registering in the European Solidarity Corps portal, you’ll find some of the published opportunities that could interest you. Also, if you’ve tagged yourself as available, you might be contacted by organizations that want to match you with their projects. Keep in mind some of the opportunities may not be published and can still be available at some of the organizations/agencies in your country. You can try and look for these projects on their websites, probably under volunteering abroad. Keep looking wherever you can, don't limit yourself, some of the volunteering projects can be very flexible, don't be afraid of contacting them. You can always ask for more info in your National Youth Agency.

What type of support do you get?

There is no salary, but you are entitled to travel, accommodation and subsistence, as well as insurance coverage for the duration of the activity and a small amount of money to spend to cover your personal expenses. You will have access to various services such as language support and training. You should always ask what type of support you'll be getting, according to the local and the type of project, just to be sure you'll be getting everything you need.

But why should you do it?

This can be your opportunity to go abroad, meet different cultures, and why not be more ambitious and learn another language? The benefits are countless and each project have its own challenges that can shape you into a better problem-solving individual. You can also suggest your own personal Solidarity Project. At the end, you can get a certificate or a Youth Pass, which describes specifically the skills you were able to acquire while volunteering. Hopefully they'll give you the final push to get the job you aspire to have, the university you always wanted do go to, or simply making the difference with a personal experience you won't be able to forget.
